The Equality and Diversity Scheme 2009-2012 was adopted by the Council on 18-06-2009.

The development of the scheme started in May 2008, with involvement events held with local groups, professional organisations, individuals and staff. These events provided a lot of information that informed both the scheme's content and action plan.

As a direct result of the events held, a total of 8 priority themes were identified, which now form the main focus of the scheme's action plan:

• Communication, access and information
• Working with community/voluntary/partner/professional organisations and groups
• Environment
• Leisure and community safety
• Housing
• Education
• Social services
• Employment and training.

The Council's senior managers have been involved in compiling the Scheme's action plan, to ensure it is service-specific, realistic and achievable within the next three years. Many of the issues raised during the initial development period have been included in the Scheme and action plan.

As was noted at the events it has not been possible to include every issue raised within the draft scheme. All the information gained from the events has been kept and will be revisited periodically throughout the life of the Scheme and as it is reviewed annually.

The BSL version of the Summary is being prepared. Until this is available, the BSL version of the draft summary will remain available.The draft and final versions have no major differences.

Other format versions of the scheme are also being prepared.
