It is a SportsWales initiative in partnership with National governing bodies of sport and local authorities. The sports programme is funded by the National Lottery and is designed to encourage 7-11 year olds to participate in sport whilst having fun.

Dragon Sport aims to encourage all young people to participate in organised out of school sporting activities, by working closely with schools and community sports clubs. By encouraging school-club links it broadens the opportunities for young people to participate in good quality sport activities.Image depicting Sport Wales logo

The programme is also intended to provide youngsters with a more diverse range of sports, whilst at the same time attract kids who simply don't have the opportunity to play sport outside of their School PE lessons.

A total of eight sports are available in the Dragon Sports scheme which include: rugby, athletics, cricket, football, hockey, netball, tennis and more recently, golf.
