Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, Morriston

Photograph of the war memorial

Philadelphia is a former Calvinistic Methodist Chapel that stands on the north side of Globe Street in Morriston. It was built in 1802 and extended in 1829, drawing its membership from the local community. It celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2002, but by 2008 it had closed. The building still stands and has been converted into housing.

Morriston in 1914 was part of the industrial heartland of Swansea. Globe Street included a bridge over the canal and railway, both of which have given way to the A4067 today. Within a short distance of the chapel was a colliery and iron foundry, while chimneys of the steel, tinplate and spelter works smoked nearby.

The majority of the chapel's records are held in the National Library of Wales, but a small number of items are held here at West Glamorgan Archives, including this photograph of the war memorial plaque which used to be on display in the church. It is a carved tablet in white marble on a black backing which lists the names of the men from the church who lost their lives in the Great War. There are eight names on the main part of the plaque, with an additional name below, making it nine in total. Underneath is a smaller plaque to record that the memorial was donated by Mr Evan R. Lewis, church elder.
