First Swansea Sea Scouts

Roll of Honour

Robert Baden Powell had founded the Boy Scouts movement in 1908 and within a couple of years troops of Sea Scouts were being set up, operating as part of the Boy Scouts movement, but with particular emphasis on naval training and water-based activities.

Swansea's troop, the First Swansea Sea Scouts, was established in July 1913. During their first year of operation, with help from Captain Heneage of Park le Breos, they managed to acquire two boats and held a training camp on Gower. When war broke out, many of the scout masters and former scouts joined up for active service.

The Roll of Honour measures 55 x 75 cm. It is an amateur design in ink and watercolour on paper, and features the trefoil flag of the Boy Scouts movement, the Union Flag and the naval White Ensign flag.

The 60 names listed are those of the men from the troop who served in the armed forces, and the six whose names are outlined in black are those who died. They are informally written, and may have been added in as the war progressed. It was probably displayed at the troop headquarters, but we do not know for certain. At some stage it was taken out of its frame and rolled up for safe storage.
