This is the largest research investment ever made in Swansea University.  The project includes several low-energy design features.  These include geothermal piling which uses stable ground temperatures to heat or cool the building.  It is also serviced by a district Combined Heat & Power generator which produces free heat for hot water as a by product of on-campus electrical generation.

Internal features include state of the art laboratory facilities, meeting rooms and a cafe.  There is also a business centre aimed at encouraging close collaboration with business and outside manufacturing/research facilities.

Extensive glazed areas have been incorporated to the front of the building to maximise light and to demonstrate the transparency of the research process.  This helps to minimise the need for artificial light and creates a working environment that feels natural and comfortable.

The Institute of Life Science won the Large Commercial Schemes category at the 2007 Swansea "Built in Quality" Awards.
