The site was previously used as a petrol station, and with this development, has resulted in a successful use of a Brownfield site.  The remediation was difficult and although it should have been problem free there was one petrol tank left on site.

The buildings foundations were created with one successive concrete pour.  This took a whole weekend, and although added to the difficulties of the build, was effectively overcome.

A nautical theme has been used with the balconies having ship's bows created.  Other features include the colour coding of each floor with the separating walls between the stairwells having fire resistant glass blocks to maximise the use of light.  There are communal washing and laundry facilities together with discrete underground parking.

The ground floor has been designed with disabled tenants in mind, and features include the fitting of hoists, together with an extra large kitchen to accommodate people with disabilities.  The building is fully accessible, and includes a recharge area for electrically powered scooters.

Capstan House won the Multiple Housing category at the 2004 Swansea "Built in Quality" Awards and the 2004 South Wales "Built in Quality" Awards.  They were also nominated in the Best Access/Disability Innovation category in the 2004 National "Built in Quality" Awards.
