A number of events are taking place across the city over the next week, giving people the chance to pay their respects to the fallen.

Among the events being arranged is a Royal British Legion remembrance service at Swansea's cenotaph on Saturday November 11 at 10.15am, where the Lord Mayor, Cllr Philip Downing, and the Lady Mayoress, Lilian Downing, will be in attendance.

November 11 is the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today, marking the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, when the First World War ended.

The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress will also attend a remembrance assembly at Gowerton Comprehensive School on Friday November 10, a Royal British Legion festival of remembrance at the Brangwyn Hall on Saturday November 11, a Royal British Legion remembrance service at All Saints Church in Oystermouth on Sunday November 12, and a Royal British Legion remembrance service at St Mary's Church in the city centre on Sunday November 12.

Cllr Downing said: "These events are among many taking place in Swansea over the next week or so, as we pause to pay our respects to the fallen.

"So many local people have made the ultimate sacrifice over the years, giving their lives so that we can enjoy the freedom that many of us sometimes take for granted.

"I'd urge as many people as possible to take a few minutes over the weekend to reflect on the sacrifices of the fallen and recognise the on-going service of our Armed Forces personnel to protect the democracy that we cherish."

Also taking place on Saturday November 11 is a 'Silence in the Square' event at Castle Square, being attended by Deputy Lord Mayor, Cllr David Phillips, and the Deputy Lady Mayoress, Cllr Sybil Crouch.

Lasting from 10.20am to noon, the event will include a two-minute silence at 11am, as well as poignant performances from the Swansea Philharmonic Choir, the Dancerama performing arts school, and Loud Applause Rising Stars.

The Deputy Lord Mayor and Deputy Lady Mayoress will also attend a Dunvant Male Choir remembrance concert at Three Crosses Chapel on Saturday November 11, and a Royal British Legion remembrance service at St Catherine's Church in Gorseinon on Sunday November 12.
