Steven Wilyeo's 'Death of Innocence' opens on Sat 4th at 6pm

This exhibition and series of works centres around the theme of stolen or lost childhood. This modern world seems opposed to children being children for any length of time; in both developed and developing countries children are treated like commodities, disposable play-things for the whims of the immoral and misguided. At one end of the scale high street retail chains sell sexually suggestive clothing for primary school children, whilst at the other end, child trafficking and exploitation are increasing exponentially. This along with soft-porn music videos aimed at adolescents and the proliferation of pornographic material at the touch of a smart phone button make for a dark reality. The benefits trap is a catalyst to over-sized families trapped in their own poverty hell.

This series is mixed-media, acrylic paint and collage on various materials including discarded doors, old TV sets, childs bed panels and paper. The collage used is from comic and cartoon annuals that I owned as a child back in the 1980's. There are two main figures throughout the series; these figures represent childhood and adult or worldly corruption. The works are emotive and disturbing in parts.
