Gower Sheep Go Baa-rmy for Swansea's UK City of Culture Bid

A flock of blue sheep have been raising some eyebrows in Gower this weekend.

Blue Sheep

The flock, from the famous award-wining Gower Salt Marsh Lamb producers, are going baa-rmy for Swansea's UK City of Culture bid by having a vivid Swansea 2021 blue makeover.

The stunt, which was the brainchild of Gower Salt Marsh Lamb owner, Rowland Pritchard and his son, Will, uses animal-friendly dye so it won't cause any harm to the sheep. It will also wear off naturally, so the animals will be back to their usual white colour before long.

Rowland and Will decided to dye their prized flock to visually demonstrate their support for Swansea as it competes against Coventry, Paisley, Stoke and Sunderland for the coveted title of UK City of Culture 2021. People visiting Gower will see the stylish flock grazing near Weobley Castle or down on the nearby salt marshes from which they get their renowned name.

Rowland Pritchard said: "I've been following Swansea's UK City of Culture bid closely and I really wanted to add my support to it, because we believe that so many local businesses, like us, could benefit so much from a successful bid.

"It was a bit messy and it took a while, but they look fantastic! We used a non-toxic sheep spray which we normally use to daub sheep and is totally animal friendly so it won't do them any harm. Gower Salt Marsh Lamb is such an iconic Swansea product - we are part of the fabric of this land and of the rural culture of this area - and we are very proud of the fact that our products are known all over the world. Dying our flock the Swansea 2021 blue is a bit of fun but I hope it will catch people's attention and prompt them to back the bid. They're already causing quite a stir!"

Local personality and radio presenter, Kevin Johns MBE, who is part of the Swansea 2021 team said: "We are tickled blue that Gower Salt Marsh Lamb has carried out this funny, creative gesture to show their support for our bid and really getting into the spirit of things. Seeing sheep sporting the Swansea 2021 blue colour is a real treat, what a fun way to show support!

"This not only gives the Swansea 2021 campaign great visibility, it highlights the very important point that local business, as well as tourist attractions, would stand to benefit greatly of Swansea was to win this prestigious title. Like Gower Salt Marsh Lamb, we want 'ewe' all to back the bid!"

To back the bid, follow 'Swansea2021' on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and get involved in the conversation by using the hashtag #Swansea2021.
