Football and rugby training and matches will kick-off within weeks at the new all-weather facility at Morriston.

Work is also progressing well at Penyrheol and both will be ready for the new sports season.

A third pitch will be created at Cefn Hengoed Leisure Centre.

They represent an investment of more than £1.4m in new sporting facilities by Swansea Council, supported by the All Wales Collaboration fund.

The comprehensive schools at all three sites will be able to use the new pitches, as well as local sports clubs for training or when their games are cancelled on natural grass pitches because of the weather.

All three synthetic pitches will be flood lit and they all use the latest technology which means the playing surfaces are suitable for competitive football and full contact rugby.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Major Projects, said: "The opening of these new pitches is eagerly awaited and I'm very pleased to see the progress that is being made.

"I am sure once completed they will be widely used by the pupils at the neighbouring schools and by local rugby and football clubs.

"This significant investment is part of our commitment to deliver first class sporting and leisure facilities in Swansea. We want to make sure there is an opportunity for people of all ages to play and enjoy sport."

In the past two seasons over a third of all junior football matches have been cancelled and rugby clubs have also reported incidents of junior teams losing up to six weeks of fixtures due to poor weather.

The new 3G pitches, which have a durable, all-weather surface with porous layers that let water drain through easily, should help tackle the problem.

Morriston Comprehensive School Headteacher Martin Franklin said: "We are delighted to have a state of the art 3G playing surface at Morriston, that reflects the fantastic facilities we have across the school.

"The 3G pitch will allow our students to have a superb all-weather surface that we can use throughout the year.

"This new playing surface would be the envy of many professional clubs and will further enhance the already outstanding sports provision our PE department provides."
