World street food market set for city centre

Street food from around the world will be tickling the taste buds of Swansea city centre visitors this week.

Italian market

Mediterranean cured meats, paella, pastries and cheese from across Europe and beyond will feature in a Continental Street Market being held on Oxford Street from Wednesday May 17 to Saturday May 20.

Open from 10.00am to 6.00pm, Swansea Council and RR Events are behind the Continental Street Market.

Chinese street food will also be included in the event, as well as a selection of cakes and barbecued treats.

Over 20 stalls will make up the Continental Street Market.

Sarah Lawton, from Swansea Council's city centre team, said: "We're looking forward to welcoming the Continental Street Market to Swansea. From quirky craft items to hot food, the event will add vibrancy to the city centre, complementing the fantastic offer that's available in our indoor market, shops, restaurants and other businesses."

Tony Walsh, RR Events Managing Director, said: "Our team of staff and traders have been involved in markets across Europe for over 10 years. With our newly developed brand, the Continental Street Market is sure to create an atmosphere and buzz as it tours the UK."

As part of National Vegetarian Week and the national Love Your Local Market campaign, a pop-up event called Swansea Vegfest is being held at Swansea indoor market on Saturday May 20, with information and advice on living a vegan lifestyle.

The event, lasting from 10.00am to 4.00pm, will showcase a variety of local businesses, who will be on hand with tasty treats, cosmetics, arts and a kids' corner to keep children entertained.

People who live a vegan lifestyle consume no food that comes from animals, including meat, eggs and dairy products. In a survey carried out last year, it was found 542,000 people across the UK have adopted a plant-based diet, which was up from 150,000 people in 2006.
