More progress for Swansea city centre regeneration plans

Major plans to regenerate Swansea city centre have taken another step forward.

St David's pedestrian footbridge

Rivington Land, the company Swansea Council has appointed to regenerate the St David's development site, has now published a draft outline planning application.

The draft outline planning application includes the ideas and concepts for the site's regeneration. Responses to feedback during a consultation exercise carried out with residents, businesses and other organisations late last year are also included.

The St David's development site is made up of land both north and south of Oystermouth Road that includes the former St David's shopping centre and the LC car park.

New shops, restaurants, a boutique cinema, a hotel, plenty of car parking spaces and a major, state-of-the art indoor arena are among their winning ideas for the site. A broad pedestrian bridge over Oystermouth Road is also being proposed.

Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said: "The major regeneration of the St David's development site will transform Swansea city centre into a leading destination for retail, dining, leisure and recreation.

"Our focus is on delivering the kind of thriving city centre that the people of Swansea deserve as soon as we can, so the amount of progress that's being continually made is especially pleasing. We listened to residents, businesses and other organisations during the December consultation and have acted on their feedback. This can be shown by the student accommodation originally proposed for the site north of Oystermouth Road now being removed from the plans to reflect people's views.

"We've also already shortlisted a number of potential operators for the proposed digital indoor arena, with a view to appointing a specialist in the next few months who can then help us finalise its specification. This scheme is moving forward as quickly as possible, along with our plans to regenerate Kingsway and the Civic Centre site, with further details of these developments to be released once the City Deal is signed.

"Consultation will continue until Rivington Land submits their outline planning application in March this year."

Rivington Land is also planning a 'Meet the Team' event towards the middle of February, with details to be announced once they're confirmed.
