A spectacular new event is being planned for Kingsway to celebrate the countdown to Christmas in Swansea.

Swansea Council is finalising the details of the event, which will accompany the switch-on of the Christmas lights on the evening of Thursday November 10.

Part of the event will feature a staged area, being organised in partnership with Swansea Business Improvement District (BID) and The Wave radio station, to help generate a festive atmosphere.

The family-friendly event will also feature themed Christmas entertainment that's never been seen in the city centre before.

The Christmas lights switch-on has been moved to a Thursday this year at the request of city centre businesses to help kick-start their Christmas late-night openings.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: "We review our Christmas events every year as we continually look to keep on improving the Christmas experience in Swansea city centre.

"Although the final details of the Kingsway event  are still being kept under wraps, residents and visitors to the city can be assured that they're in for a treat. As well as a staged area and a real Christmas tree at the Princess Way end of Kingsway, there will also be spectacular performances that have never been seen in the city centre before.

"We're confident that what we're planning will lead to a family-friendly event that will generate a terrific atmosphere and boost our city centre businesses as we head towards a time of the year that's critically important for traders.

"Details of the event's make-up will be announced nearer to the date, but we don't want to spoil the surprise by revealing too much in advance."

Russell Greenslade, Chief Executive of Swansea BID, said: "Working with the council, it's great that we have refreshed the event this year with the big lights switch-on being moved to a Thursday evening to help kick-start late-night Christmas opening for businesses.

"We have lots planned for the Christmas period, including our popular Santa's Post Office in Shoppers Walk arcade, Christmas-themed walk-around characters, a golden ticket promotion and Small Business Saturday activities to name but a few, which are all backed with our regional independent hidden gems and national treasures marketing campaigns through our Big Heart of Swansea brand.

"With all this exciting activity going on, in addition to the council's events, we'd encourage shoppers to continue supporting city centre traders during the Christmas period."

Waterfront Winterland will also be returning to the Museum Park from the evening of November 18. The attraction will again feature a big wheel, Santa's grotto, a funfair and two ice rinks - the main Admiral rink and a smaller rink for children.
