Night-time works plan for West Way this week

Night-time works are planned for West Way this week as a major road improvement scheme gathers pace.

West Way

Weather depending, road surfacing works will be taking place between West Way's junctions with Clarence Terrace and Singleton Park from 6pm to 6am, starting on Monday September 19.

Subject to the weather, northbound road closures are planned for the nights of Monday September 19 and Tuesday September 20, with southbound road closures planned for the nights of Wednesday September 21 and Thursday September 22.

Motorists are encouraged to follow diversion signs or plan alternative routes. They're also being asked to allow additional time for planned appointments or travel plans.

Swansea Council is behind the works, which are being funded by the Welsh Government's Vibrant and Viable Places Swansea City Centre Regeneration programme that was awarded in June, 2014.

Vibrant and Viable Places (VVP) is a three-year programme (2014-2017) through which Swansea Council has been awarded more than £9 million to target key regeneration projects in the city centre.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: "The West Way improvement scheme is now largely complete, with works on track to be finished towards the middle of November.

"The scheme will lead to better pedestrian crossings, more greenery, a reduction in the amount of traffic light phasing and a new road layout close to the City Bus Station to help improve bus movements. This will benefit many thousands of motorists and pedestrians every week.

"The road surfacing works that need to be carried out this week will lead to a level of disruption, which is why they're being carried out at night to minimise inconvenience for motorists on a busy city centre road.

"Nearby residents and businesses have been informed as we continue to do all we can to keep disruption to the bare minimum."

Temporary closures of some pedestrian crossings on West Way may also be required over coming weeks for other works to take place. Where necessary, diversion signs will be put in place for pedestrians, but it will be business as usual for customers of Coffee Bean on Plymouth Street and the Grand Theatre.
