Mascots limbering up for annual race

An osprey, a bear and a cockerel are among the sights visitors to Swansea's promenade may have seen this week.

Mascots 2016

The trio is part of a group of colourful mascots now in training for a 100-metre dash on the day of the Admiral Swansea Bay 10k (Sunday September 18).

Other mascots also confirmed for the race include Cyril and Cybil the Swan, Biggles Bear on behalf of Wales National Air Ambulance, the LC's Tommy the Turtle, Popty the official mascot for Jermin Productions 2016 Pantomime Dick Whittington, and Snorkel the dog representing Guide Dogs Cymru, who is returning this year to see if he can retain his title.

The winner of the 100-metre mascot dash, which starts 10 minutes after the main race outside St Helen's, will win £100 for their chosen charity.

If there are any mascots out there would like to take part in the mascot race, it's not too late. To register your place contact Lindsay Sleeman on 01792 635428.

Swansea Council is behind the Admiral Swansea Bay 10k. As well as the main 10k event, there'll also be1k, 3k and 5k races for juniors.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: "The mascot race is a fun feature of the Admiral Swansea Bay 10k that's always especially popular with the watching crowds. It's one part of an overall event that also includes a number of other races to cater for all ages and goals. Although the deadline for the 10k has now closed, entries are still open for the children's races, so I'd urge any juniors who haven't yet entered to get in touch. We're again expecting thousands of participants and spectators to pack the promenade for a family-friendly event that will also boost nearby traders because of the sheer volume of people it attracts."
