The West Glamorgan Archives Service is setting the standard

THE West Glamorgan Archives Service has been recognised for excellence.

West Glamorgan Archives Service

The service, based in Swansea's Civic Centre, has achieved prestigious UK Archives Accreditation Standard thanks to the quality of its work.

The status, awarded by the UK Archive Service Accreditation Committee based at The National Archives in London, recognises good practice and agreed standards that encourage and support development. Awarded to only 50 archive services across the UK, the standard is aimed at both public and private sector organisations that hold archive collections.

Swansea University's Richard Burton Archives has also been awarded the standard.

The West Glamorgan Archives Service is a joint service for both Swansea Council and Neath Port Talbot Council.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: "Achieving the Accreditation Standard is an excellent badge of recognition for the West Glamorgan Archives Service.

"Accredited archive services provide a high level of service to their users, preserve their collections in line with national standards and are robust, sustainable archives which plan and deliver on-going improvement.  We're delighted with this result."

County Archivist Kim Collis said: "Achieving the Accreditation Standard has been a team effort for the service for almost a year. A lot of hard work has gone into the application, including the development of a robust plan for the future shape of the service.  It's very heartening to see that work recognised in the award."

Swansea Council's archives and library services have also co-ordinated a BBC Radio 4 visit to the city from August 22 to August 25. A programme called 'The Listening Project' will park a recording booth in the Civic Centre car park by the library that people can use to record conversations on subjects of their choice.

On August 25 from 9am to 9.30am, the programme will be broadcast live from the Civic Centre, hosted by Fi Glover.
