City centre highway improvements continue later in July

Highway improvements along a popular Swansea city centre route are set to continue later in July.

West Way

Swansea Council has announced that further works along West Way between Singleton Street and Clarence Terrace will commence on July 24 and are scheduled for completion on August 1.

The latest works will be carried out overnight to avoid causing major disruption to city centre traffic and will involve the resurfacing of the road.

The resurfacing work follows on from changes to the layout of West Way that were completed in June.

The West Way improvement scheme is being completed with funding from the Welsh Government's Vibrant and Viable Places Swansea City Centre Regeneration programme that was awarded in June, 2014.

The overall project is expected to last until the autumn and will lead to better pedestrian crossings over West Way, more greenery and better traffic flows because of a planned reduction in traffic light phasing.

A new pedestrian crossing has already opened between the bus station and the rear of the Grand Theatre to enable direct access from West Way to Singleton Street via the covered walkway.

A Swansea Council spokesperson said: "The improvement works on West Way will benefit motorists as well as pedestrians who pass between the city centre and the Sandfields community every day. The changes will also improve the appearance of the busy city centre road by introducing more greenery and other environmental enhancements.

"The nature of the work means traffic management is necessary. All the highway works are planned for the evening and overnight so disruption will be kept to a minimum."
