Copy certificates

Certificates can only be issued for births, deaths or marriages that took place in Swansea.

What information will I need to have when applying for a certificate?

Births

  • The name of the person at the time of birth
  • The date and place of birth
  • The name of at least one parent

Deaths

  • Name of the deceased
  • The date and place of death
  • The date of birth or age of the deceased
  • Any other information e.g. last address/occupation/name of spouse

Marriages

  • Names of both parties to the marriage
  • The date and place of marriage

How can I apply for a certificate, what will it cost and how long will it take?

By Post

To apply by post you need to complete the relevant application form or you can send us a letter containing the relevant information.

All certificates are £10.00. Please enclose a stamped addressed envelope or an additional 50 pence for postage. Payment can be made by cheque or postal order to be made payable to 'The City and County of Swansea'.

Postal applications are usually processed within 5 working days of receipt.

In Person

You can apply in person at the Register Office, Civic Centre, Swansea SA1 3SN

Priority same day service - £10.00 fee per certificate plus a £5.00 priority service fee per certificate. We aim to issue certificates within 30 minutes.

Family history certificates can only be issued as a priority if exact information is provided. 

Certificate to be posted on - £10.00 fee per certificate plus a 50 pence postage fee. These applications are usually processed within 5 working days.

Swansea Register Office is not liable for any certificates that are delayed or lost in the post.

Certificate to be collected - £10.00 fee per certificate. You will be able to collect your certificate from us after 5 working days.

Payments can be made by cash, debit or credit card. If you choose to pay by credit card, an additional charge of 2% will be added to your payment.

By Telephone

You can order a certificate over the telephone for a fee of £25.00 per certificate. We will complete your application form over the telephone and process your payment by debit or credit card.

If you call us by 2.30pm we would normally send your certificate on the same day.

You can choose to have your certificate posted on first class or 'Signed For' (please be aware that this service requires a signature on delivery).
