Swansea Centre for Deaf PeopleOpens new window

Swansea Deaf Club meets every Thursday from 7.00 pm at the Centre.

Swansea Hard of Hearing Group

A free mutual support group for all ages meets in theDiscovery Room at Swansea Central Library (Civic Centre) on the first Friday of every month from 3:30 - 5:30.

Hear to MeetOpens new window

A social group for older adults (50+) with a hearing loss organised by Action on Hearing Loss.  There are two groups in the Swansea area.

  • Willow Court, Campion Gardens, Clyne Common - meets on the third Tuesday of each month from 10.30 to12.00
  • Centrepoint, Market Street, Morriston - meets on the third Tuesday of each month from 14:00 to 16:00

An umbrella organisation of associations, both voluntary and statutory, working in the field of hearing loss and deafness. It also runs a Communication Support Agency to facilitate language support.

RAD works with people with all forms of deafness. It specialises in advocacy and employment issues, legal support and deaf community development. It also supports deaf people who have a learning disability or mental health difficulties to live as independently as possible.

Communications Specialists

Many of the support organisations for deaf people provide communications support. In addition, the following organisations offer specialist communications information and support.

Next Generation Text Service (NGT)Opens new window

A facility which helps people who cannot hear or cannot speak to keep in contact with people using the telephone.  A typed message can be spoken by someone in the service, or a spoken message typed, depending on individual needs.  There is a free app which enables the service to be used on a computer, smartphone or tablet.  It can also be used with a textphone.  The NGT website explains the different ways the system can be used.

An organisation specialising in communication with deaf and deafblind people to encourage and promote full access to society and greater understanding of deaf and deafblind people and the languages and communication methods they use.

WITS - Wales Interpretation and Translation ServiceOpens new window

WITS provides interpreters in a wide range of languages including BSL, and is the organisation used by the City and County of Swansea when interpreters are needed.

Talking Hands and Tiddlers

Talking Hands is a youth club for deaf young people (aged 10-17) and hearing children of deaf parents.

Tiddlers is a family support group for parents of deaf children (aged 0-6) and hearing children of deaf parents.
