ALN - Sensory Processing Disorder
SPD (formerly called Sensory Integration Disorder) is a condition where the brain and nervous system have trouble processing or integrating stimulus.
General signs
There are many signs of a sensory processing disorder; here are some general signs that could indicate your child / young person may have difficulties.
General signs to look for are:
- 'Melting down' from sensory overload.
- Not reacting to pain, heat, or cold as expected.
- Difficulty managing changes in routines.
- Coordination and balance.
- Invading personal space or playing too roughly.
- Trying new foods.
- Managing emotions.
Next steps
If you are concerned that your child / young person may have a Sensory Processing Disorder that impacts their learning, speak to the class teacher or Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCo) and they will be able to work with you and work out what happens next. If your child is under 5 years old, you need to speak to your Health Visitor.
