Swansea Market joins in national celebrations on Saturday

COOKERY workshops and treasure hunts have been organised at Swansea Market for this weekend.

The free activities are among a number taking place in the historic attraction from 10.30am to 3.30pm on Saturday (May 16) to mark Love Your Local Market fortnight celebrations being held across the country.

Other activities will include face painting and arts and crafts.

Swansea Council is behind the fun. Treasure hunts, including free tasters along the way, will take place throughout the day.

The market is also teaming up with the Skate, Street and Sports Festival 2015 being held in Castle Square on the day to help introduce as many young people to the attraction as possible.

This will complement a Swansea Market digital audio campaign that's currently targeting local 15 to 24-year-olds on Spotify, an online commercial music streaming service.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: "It's very fitting that Swansea Market should be at the heart of the Love your Local Market celebrations across the UK. It's not just Swansea people who love it - it's also been recently named Great Britain's best large indoor market by NABMA, the National Association of British Market Authorities.

"Our staff work hard alongside the market traders to strike a balance between keeping up with the times and maintaining the attraction's unique charm. We hope all that's been arranged for the weekend will encourage more people to visit the market who'll then make return trips in future."
