Let's support National Transgender Week

It's National Transgender Awareness Week and we are flying the Transgender Awareness flag at Guildhall in Swansea to mark the occasion.

Earlier this week we joined up with local community groups including Sadie's Butterflies and the Swansea Bay LGBTQ+ Forum at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea to commemorate the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

The event included a talk by Sarah Jones, the first person to be ordained in the Church of England having previously made a gender change.

Louise Gibbard, Swansea Council's Cabinet member for Supporting Communities, said: "Opportunities for our local transgender and LGBTQ+ communities to get together in person have been few and far between over the last 20 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"So it was good to see people coming along to re-establish networks and meet new friends.

"As we embark on our journey to become a Human Rights City in Swansea, events such as this provide a much needed opportunity to come together to discuss and connect.

"While Transgender Day of Remembrance is necessarily a reflective occasion to honour and respect lives lost, it was also uplifting as Sarah Jones' inspiring talk gave us much to think about around inclusivity and equality and it was wonderful to hear about the mutual support Sadie's Butterflies gives to our transgender community in Swansea."
