Am I eligible for Universal Credit?

To make a claim for Universal Credit you must meet these gateway conditions.

  • Be at least 18 and under 60 years and six months.
  • Be single.
  • Be a new job-seeker.
  • Be fit for work - i.e. must not be covered by a doctor's certificate or have been found to have limited capability for work by the DWP.
  • Have a national insurance number.
  • Have less than £6,000 in capital.
  • Have a bank, building society or PO account or a credit union account.
  • Be a British Citizen who has resided in the UK throughout the two years before the claim, without a continuous absence of four weeks or more during this time.

Also, you must not:

  • Be receiving Income Support; Jobseekers Allowance (either contributory or income based); Employment and Support Allowance (either contributory or income based) Incapacity Benefit; Severe Disablement Allowance; Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payment.
  • Be waiting for a decision regarding Employment & Support Allowance, Jobseekers Allowance, Income Support, housing benefit or tax credits.
  • Be appealing a decision concerning entitlement to Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseekers Allowance or Income Support, or challenging, a benefit decision (including housing benefit and tax credits).
  • Be pregnant or have given birth in the last 15 weeks before the claim.
  • Be sick or declared unfit for work (with a doctor's certificate).
  • Be self employed.
  • Have earnings above £338 per month.
  • Be homeless or residing in accommodation providing care, supervision, counselling, advice or personal support.
  • Live in the same household as someone who is away and in the armed forces.
  • Be a home owner or part owner.
  • Be a carer for: a child; a 'qualifying young person' or a disabled person (apart from as a volunteer or employee).
  • Be in education or training of any kind or expect to be within a month of claiming UC.
  • Be subject to a court of protection order or have an appointee.

If your circumstances mean you are not eligible you will need to make a claim for one of the benefits from the current system.
