In your Community
Our five Community Connectors can help you get involved with groups, organisations and activities in your local area.
Social Services gets many enquiries from or about people who do not need formal social care services, but whose wellbeing is at risk because they are lonely or isolated. Some people simply aren't aware of things that are going on in their local area; others lack the confidence to go along to groups, or don't know how to get there. There are also people who would like to find an opportunity to use their skills or experience to help others, but don't know where to start.
Community Connectors know their areas well and have information and contacts for a wide range of organisations and activities. They also have a role in developing community projects and initiatives which create social opportunities and promote wellbeing.
Your local Community Connector can phone or visit you in your home and have a chat about how you're feeling, and what sort of things you'd like to get involved in. Sometimes they will immediately be able to suggest options that may suit you; sometimes they will need to go away and make some enquiries on your behalf first. If you're feeling a bit nervous about meeting new people, your Community Connector can go with you to a group or activity for the first time and help you settle in. If you need more support for a bit longer, they may be able to link you up with someone who'll be able to go with you until you feel more comfortable. They can also let you know about local transport options.
Many people are referred to their local Community Connector by a social worker or their GP, but if you feel your Community Connector could help you, just pick up the phone and give her a call.
Each Community Connector is linked to a Health Community Network area.
